Some SederSkier Podcast ideas

April is almost here, and with it, the abrupt end of your Nordic ski-related content.

Except here.

While most cross-country skiers take April off, everyone (me and Ajee) at Seder-Skier.com sprints into spring. We sneak in extra on-snow training sessions, find interesting guests for our shows, and write super long blogs about things no one actually cares about.

I’m already working on a detailed memoir of my own 2024 race season — you’re going to want to just scan over that quickly or ignore it altogether.

Here are a few quick ideas for spring and summer podcasts:

  1. The state of citizens/loppet racing: How is the U.S. ski community fairing in terms of local race opportunities? Are we in a golden age? Was the golden age the Subaru Factory Team era? What events are rising? Falling? Who is doing stuff well? What are the essential ingredients for a fantastic event? What do skiers want? I say we pull together Brian Gregg, Nathan Schultz, Kris Freeman and Andy Liebner to give us a four-corners (Midwest, Rocky Mountains, Alaska, New England) roundtable on loppet racing.
  2. Grinds only: I was a big fan of the Nordic Insights double-episode with Zach Caldwell on ski quiver, wax and grinds. But, I’d like to drill down more specifically on just one element: grinds. What are the basic grinds offered at the big U.S. stores (BNS, Caldwell, Pioneer Midwest, Gearwest, Finn Sisu, etc)? What are the differences between those places? What kind of processes do those companies use to evaluate grinds? How about overseas? How does grinding work on the World Cup? Ski Classics? What grinds should we have if we want to race our best in Europe and how do our American grinds fair over there? If I were to expand this conversation, I suppose we could also talk about hand structure tools…
  3. How to get a sponsor: Let’s talk to some representatives from ski, softgood, wax, and pole brands and figure out what it takes to get a sponsorship. What are brands looking for other than performance? How much does social media weigh into their decisions? What kind of budgets do they have and what kind of tiers are available for athletes from pros to joes? What are some different paths to sponsorship for athletes moving from NCAA to the Super Tour and beyond…or from newbie to successful masterblaster.
  4. The ultimate showdown: Mika Vermeulen, Ryan Sederquist, Devon Kershaw, all on one podcast. Everyone gets 5 minutes for opening statements, 3 minutes for cross-examination, and 12 minutes say (or sing) whatever they want (without cussing).
  5. The Dad show: there have been some shows on other podcasts talking about motherhood and high-level racing. But what about the dads? We’ll gather a few guys who have kids and still race at a high level and talk about how to balance leading a family, loving a wife, and raising kids while trying to ski a bit, too. Potential guests: Bulshunov, obviously, Babs, Brian Gregg, Matt Liebsch, Simi Hamilton, and more…
  6. Athlete guests: We’ve tried to get Alvar Myhlback (and would still love to have him on), but I’m also keen to chat with Joergen Nordhagen, who had the hands-down most impressive performance of the entire year at World Juniors.
  7. Scientific studies: It’s been awhile since we’ve flexed our M.S. in Exercise Physiology muscles. We should probably crack open a scientific journal or two and see if there are any golden morsels to find.

While, considering I usually take a random 2 month break in there, I think that ought to get us to the Park City camp next October.

Any ideas?

  1. any of these podcasts ideas are amazing. I just hope that you will find the time to do a couple, because I have to admit I miss your podcasts. You bring a unique voice to what is becoming a more mature english speaking podcast ecosystem. On the other hand, if you don’t do them, it means probably that you have more fun outside, and who am I to say no to that 🙂
