Oh really?

Recently, a prominent runner publicly came out as gay, which brought a post to the Letsrun.com forums I initially thought nothing of, but have since given great consideration.

I care how he does with his running. I don’t care at all about what lifestyle choices he makes. I wish him well with his running and his life choices.

Some people were quick to point out that “being” gay is not a “choice.” There’s a phenomenal skieologians episode right there, waiting to be chewed on, but I’m not sure it’s a battle I want to fight.

For now, I want to pose a question: is this poster onto something or ‘on’ something?

In other words, how much does it matter to you, me and fans in general, what an athlete does in their private life, away from the competitive arena? Do we care?

Should we?

To me, the answer to both questions is pretty simple.

This column will be continued tomorrow….

Take a good long contemplative look at your man nipples in the mirror this morning before you write any more about the gender and sexual spectrum.
True that you should not care about other’s intimate details but you should care deeply about every difficult step on the path that your neighbor walks.

Dan – my post said that we SHOULD care about the athletes we follow. I never stated my position on the athlete in question’s personal choices. My only take is that it’s silly when people say, “I don’t care about that person’s personal beliefs, I only care about what they do ‘on the field.’” That’s just not true … as human’s, we can’t but care and think about what our heroes do on and off the field of play.

I for one definitely take those long, contemplative looks, trust me! And I honestly do give my best effort at being empathetic when I write something! No doubt – people have difficult steps on their journey – and I do want to respect that!
