Joe Davies’ skiing progression hasn’t been perfectly linear.
“I feel like I went through some waves,” the 23-year-old British skier said.
Though his career never fully shipwrecked on a remote island, Davies did need a lifeline at one point. A regular youth podium finisher, Davies felt relatively unsatisfied in high school. He spent a PG year in Canmore training with Team ULLR, improving enough to earn a spot on the Canadian Junior National squad, but his performances the following season didn’t attract any college looks.

“I was looking back through some results and Joe’s results were not super good that year, but the year before and three years before they were quite good. So I was like, huh, I think this guy might have talent, he might just be tired,” head coach Eliska Albrigtsen said.
“And I was right.”
