Lucas Chanavat would probably be considered the best sprinter of his generation — if it weren’t for Johannes Hosflot Klaebo.

“It’s a tough period competing against him,” Chanavat said Friday night in a call with Seder-Skier.com. “But it’s also insane being able to compete with the greatest skier and sprinter of all time.”

While Klaebo has claimed six sprint globes since 2017 (he finished runner-up in 2022 after falling ill at the end of the year — even then, Richard Jouve needed a miracle run to steal the cup — and was eighth in the COVID campaign of 2021, when Norway sat out much of the season) Chanavat has gone 8-3-6-5-5-3-2-3 in the sprint cup standings in the same time frame.

The rivals — and friends — will square off again in Saturday’s classic sprint in Ruka, Finland.

But it won’t be the first time the French freestyle specialist and the Norwegian GOAT will have skied side-by-side this month. The Fischer skiers spent two weeks training together in Livigno at the beginning of November, sharing workout insights and pushing the limits of the sport.

“We get along quite well and it’s always fun moments — at least from my side,” said Chanavat. “I am not only training with him to improve, I’m also training with him because I like the person that he is.”
