It’s been a rough last 60 hours or so in our house. A rogue virus has made the rounds and hit me hard Sunday morning. From Saturday evening until now, I’ve been basically laying on my back, chugging water, tea and Body Armour and waiting for when I can swallow another Tylenol. Even though the max levels of Acetaminophen were coursing through my veins most of the day on Sunday, I couldn’t get the temperature below 103. It peaked at one point at 103.8!
Fortunately, I didn’t have too many other symptoms other than a splitting headache…but it was still miserable. I had to cancel a podcast interview and haven’t done much in the way of getting the Weekly Wax together either. So, I apoloigze.
Anyway, the ski season starts in earnest this week. I have interviews lined up with a few members of the French and British national teams, which we’ll hopefully roll out before or after Beitostolen. I also should be receiving some notes and comments from a few U.S. Ski Team athletes as well, plus, there is a Jessie Diggins press conference coming up on the 25th.
Locally, the skiing was fantastic up on Turquoise Lake Road through the weekend — though I missed a sunny Sunday of skiing as I battled the virus by watching old Mt. Everest documentaries (trying to fathom how someone could deal with an illness like mine while stranded up at Advanced Base Camp…or worse).
All that is to say, this week’s Weekly Wax is a little weak. It’s still kind of hard for me to look at a screen at the moment. But, I plan to get back on the horse as soon as I can.

Paul – Thank you for the encouragement! It means a lot. And I’ll return the sentiment — you are doing a lot more for the Nordic community than I am by inspiring future generations! Hope to see you out on the snow soon!
SUBJECT: Matt Whitcomb is a national treasure
Ryan
That was a great interview with Whitcomb. Seriously. Congrats on that. Great questions. Appropriately tough and pointed but professional and respectful. It was a high integrity interview and I feel like you got some good stuff out of him. I hope you’re proud of it.
The US really is lucky to have Matt. What a pro. You really have to respect his temperament and demeanor. Impressive.
That said, it was kind of funny to hear him act a little surprised about the difference in the team dynamics between the men’s team and the women’s team. LOL. Wait! Are you saying that the way that men relate to each other is different than the way women relate to each other??? Shocker. Haha. Of course, I can imagine that folks of a certain ideological persuasion may actually find that to be a novel concept. Good grief.
In any case, I hope this interview helps you get even better access to US team members this season. Good luck! Keep going!
And, do yourself a favor and take a kid skiing!
Knox –
Went skiing with Novi and Ella this morning!!! Glad I passed the Knox test of not being too much of a homer! I’ve received other positive feedback from the interview since your email, too. Hopefully I can discuss some reflections on an upcoming podcast.
